Notes
a. Note:   It might seem strange that Mary Catherine would come to Canal Twp. instead of staying in Canada after her husband Will left her. In those days a woman remained with her man ... no matter what. As his popularity
sank, Granny's rose. She attended every invalid and was present to prepare the corpses for burial. The Coxsons truly loved the lady. (Ken
 Gibbons)
Obituary-- Citizens Press 9 April 1890
 Mary Catherine Coxson (Granny M.C.)
Mary Catherine Coxson, nee Schnell, widow of William Coxson, was born in
Markham, Ontario, Canada, October 15, 1805, and died at the residence of
her daughter, Mrs. Betsy Allen of Sugarcreek, on Tuesday March 25, 1890.
She, with her family came to this country and settled in Canal Township
in 1834 where she resided for many years, gaining many friends and
 acquaintances.
Her husband having died, she removed to Sugarcreek near the residence of her daughter, Mrs. John Whitman, where she lived a number of years. Then
on account of ill health, she went to live with her son, Charles Sheldon Coxson, where she lived sixteen years. The last five months of her life,
she stayed with her daughter. Two months prior to her death, a cancer was
removed from her face which perfectly healed. She died after two days of
 severe illness.
She was the mother of fourteen children: Rachel who died in infancy,
Betsy, John P., Charles S., William, Mary Ann Shaffstall, Margarget
Crooks, Martha Johnston Houk, Sarah Whitman, Nancy Bailey, Louisa
Jennings, Alexander who died in infancy, Alexander R., and Liza Ann
 Shaffstall.
She was the grandmother of fifty-five children and fifty great
grandchildren. She was a member of the Wesley Methodist Church. Her last
words were: "Jesus my all to Heaven is gone, He whom I fixed my hopes
upon. His track I see and I'll pursue The narrow way till Him I view." Her remains were laid to rest in the Lupher Chapel cemetery, Rev.
 Clemence conducting the services.
