 Ancestors of
Stanford Family by Edmund Dana Barbour
!HISTORY: They Came from New York to Iowa in covered wagon because
 Iowa had
free education. In New York they had to pay tuition. Chloe wanted
 to educate
their 10 children. They started with an ox team and came by way of
 the
Great Lakes. They boarded the covered wagon on a tow-boat and the
 oxen
followed a towpath and pulled the boat. The boys would get off the
 boat
and run along the tow path and Chloe was afraid they would be lost.
 Her
daughter Rachel used to catch rides in an ox bow under the rear end
 of the
wagon. They took an 80 acre homestead two miles east of Keir Post
 office,
Buchanan Co., Iowa. Japhet built a large house. Chloe ALLEN
said she had taken care of over one hundred baby cases in the region
 where
they lived. She found a book in the road which was very useful in
 caring
 for these cases.
