Note: BIO:J. A. DEAKIN, TOWN CLERK, DIES AT 73. Held Position Since 1948. J. Augustus Deakin, town clerk of Danbury since 1948, died Sunday about 7:45 PM in Danbury Hospital. Mr. Deakin, who was 73 lived at 65 North Street. He had been in ill health recently and was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday, after having been confined to his home for the past two weeks. His election as town clerk in 1947, for the two-year term beginning in January, 1948, climaxed a long career in Danbury civic and political affairs. A Democrat, he was popular with Republicans and independents as well and he won re-election for successive two-year terms as the nominee of both political parties. Was City Clerk, Too. He served as city clerk from 1929 to 1935 and earlier was town auditor and an assistant registrar of voters. Democratic party offices he held included state central committeeman from this district in 1927 and '28, and town chairman in 1929. He was also clerk of the former Traffic Court for the District of Danbury from 1933 to 1945. Mr. Deakin had served as office manager with various Danbury firms over a period of years. He was born in Danbury Sept. 6, 1887, son of the late Thomas and Honore (Creagh) Deakin. After attending St. Peter's School and Danbury High school, he was employed for 12 years in the office of the former Vinson & Doyle hat Co., North Street. He then turned to the hotel field and was cashier and clerk at the Hotel Green here and at the Stratfield in Bridgeport. Before entering the army in 1917, he was treasurer of Bronston Bros. & Co., hat manufacturers, in Bethel. Upon his return from the Army he was employed in the office of Luke F. Sweeney contracting firm. Later he was with Doran Bros., Inc. Funeral Wednesday. Mr. Deakin was a member of the Danbury club and of St. Joseph's Holy Name Society. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Rena Hodge Deakin; a daughter, Mrs. Harry McLachlan, Jr.; eight grandchildren; a brother, George M. Deakin, and two sisters, Miss Mary Deakin and Mrs. Fred J. Minck, all of Danbury. A son, Lt. Charles Deakin, was fatally injured in 1948 in an explosion at Fort George Meade, Maryland, where he was stationed. The funeral will take place Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. from the John C. Freeland Funeral Home, 91 West Street, and at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church with a solemn mass of requiem. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. (DN-T, page 1, 3/13/61) FUNERAL HELD FOR TOWN CLERK J. A. DEAKIN. The funeral of Town Clerk J. Augustus Deakin, 65 North Street, was conducted today at 9:15 a.m. in the John C. Freeland Funeral Home and at St. Joseph's Church at 10, with a solemn requiem high mass cele- brated by the Rev. Edward J. Duffy, pastor. The Rev. Hugh F. Gallagher was deacon and the Rev. Francis G. Galla was sub-deacon. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. George B. Curtiss, chancellor of the Diocese of Bridgeport; the Rev. John J. Wigh, pastor of St. Gregory's Church; the Rev. William J. Conklin, of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church of Bridgeport; the Rev. William J. Fletcher, of St. Thomas Church, Fairfield, were seated in the sanctuary. Bearers were Charles I. Sweeney, Charles J. Durkin, Paul Kovacs, Jack Gulliver, Jr., Henry Jaber and Bethel First Selectman David W. Deakin. Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery, with graveside services conducted by Father Duffy. City and town offices at City Hall were closed until 1 p.m. today for the funeral. Mr. Deakin had served as both city clerk and town clerk of Danbury. "Mr. Deakin's death this week has taken from Danbury a man who was long active in its political life and who enjoyed great popularity with voters in and outside his own party."
