a. Note:   The obituary for Joe Maxie, often called J. K. Rankin:
  Rankin Rites Held July 2 at Methodist Church
  Funeral services were held on July 2 at 2 p.m. for J.K. (Joe Maxie) Rankin, 60 who died in his sleep at his home in the early hours of July 1st. Mr. Rankin had been in ill health for the past two years, however, his sudden death came as a shock to his family and friends. Mr. Rankin, son of late Mr. and Mrs.. Joe M. Rankin was born on January 19, 1904 in Mississippi. He came with his family to this state at the age of six years. They settled in the Tundra community and lived there and in other communities in this vicinity. On Nov. 12, 1927, Mr. Rankin was united in Marriage to Miss Mattie Lou Harris. They were the parents of three children who survive with their mother. They are Dr. Bobby J. Rankin, University Park, New Mexico; Mrs. John David Beck of Wills Point and Mrs. Roe Wayne Sledge of Plano. He is also survived by six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Eugene Langston, Wills Point and Mrs. Arthur Gates, Dallas ; and four brothers, Harvey and Melvin Rankin, Wills Point, Odie Rankin, Canton, Mississippi; and Charlie Rankin of Lubbock. Rev. Mouson Fletcher of Mount Pleasant and Rev. Herbert Garrett conducted the funeral services and Rev. Ben A .Pierce gave special music. Serving as pallbearers were Roy and Emmett Comer, Fonzo Horton, Joe and Eric Johnson, James Lawrence, Hubert Kinney and Ben Wright. Burial was in Union Grove Cemetery under direction of Eubank & Co. Funeral Home. Mr. Rankin spent many years in the oil and gasoline business. He was employed at Bagby service station in his early adult life and later worked for McLeod Service Station. He also drove a truck for Miracle Service Station and Later established a business of his own. He operated a service station and garage oh highway 80 for many years and also operated Rankin Service Station at the corner of Fifth and James Streets until his health failed and he sold his business last year. Mr. Rankin also served as school bus driver for many years for the Wills Point Independent School. In this job he made many friends among the youth of this area. Many of these friendships have endured through the years and were treasured highly by Mr. Rankin. His interest in the youth of this area was evidenced by the encouragement and help he gave them to finish high school and go to college. Mr. Rankin was a member of the Methodist Church.
