It was not tape-recorded. (Aunt) Grace stated that she disliked her stepfather because he used to pull off his shoe and frighten her with his wooden foot and leg. Because of her negative feelings for Fred, she gave me (Marjorie PACE) the only known picture of he and his brothers that is had within the family. The photograph served the purpose of establishing the gender of the mystery child, who we know now was a brother; however remains nameless. It was supposed since the family was big on tall tales that the wooden leg was just another of them. Since the apparatus used to support the wooden wooden leg, including a handhold is clearly visiable, it must be accepted now as fact. If one who specialies in early prosthesis were to see the picture a more accurate date might be placed upon it. With deep interest we learned that the leg had been lost as a youth. All the young boys were excited to see the train pull into town, but only the bravest would leap onto it as it began to slow. Fred jumped onto the moving train and then slipped and lost his leg as the wheel cut it off. Grace did not know his exact age at the time of the accident. NOTE: Perhaps a newspaper article resulted. To try to jump a train he must of been around 7 or better and in the picture he was already 18. In the photo it looks as if he still favored his leg. So the years to be checked would be 1889-1900. A photo expert says she expected the photo to be have been taken about 1897. The wooden leg makes the photo a collector's item. !FUNERAL: Owen Funeral Home Sapulpa, Creek Co, MO 1-918-224-2121, Information copied over the phone.
