  James was a farmer.
  James served as a sergeant in the Civil War in the army of the United States of America, Company K, Second New Regiment, Artillery Volunteers. James enlisted on January 1, 1864 in Springfield, Missouri. He was promoted from corporal to sergeant on October 9, 1864. He was mustered out on November 20, 1865 in Benton Barracks, Missouri. He was described in his enlistment papers as having blue eyes, fair complexion, light hair, and 5 feet and 6 inches tall.
