Notes
a. Note:   ? AL?? Any information regarding his parents and siblings is unknown. There is a listing for a Miles Gay who married Rhoda Harkins on April 17, 1810. Whether they are Giles' parents, or not is unknown but with the similarity, although variant, of the given names it's possible.
Where in North Carolina is unknown. A check of the available North Carolina Census Records and Vital Stats, came up blank. It's possible that this line was just passing through North Carolina while migrating towards Tennessee when Jiles was born--possibly, his parents just coming to America??.
Supporting information: the 1850 DeKalb County TN Census lists Jiles Gay as a white 30 year-old, male farmer from North Carolina living in Dist. 12 (Hannah's Branch) with his wife and children, which would make his birth year about 1820; the 1860 DeKalb County TN Census lists Giles Gay as a 42 year-old, male farmer from North Carolina living in Dist. 14 (Sligo) with his wife and children, making his birth year about 1818; the 1870 DeKalb County TN Census lists Giles Gay as a 52 year-old, male farmer from North Carolina living in Dist. 9 (Smithville) with his wife and children (his birth year, about 1818). There's no mention of Giles in the Census records for DeKalb County beyond this point. (There is a listing in the TN 1891 Voters List of a G.D. Gay of DeKalb County TN--Dist. 5, but I have no reason or proof to link this to this Jiles/Giles Gay. As far as I can tell, there is no mention of a Jiles/Giles in the 1880 DeKalb Co. TN Census or any of those thereafter.)
As for his wife or wives ....... This gets confusing-- Recent information sent my way listed Mary Ann Chambers (born: 1823-1828 in AL--died:?? in TN??) as a possible second marriage and the mother of several of the children, including Dabney Gay. As, yet, I've found no evidence to support this information. However, the Tennessee Marriage Records of 1851-1900, has a listing for a G. D. Gay who married Mary A. Gilbert on Oct 20, 1878 in DeKalb Co TN (other source confirmation: the Gilbert Family Tree listing of Giles Gay and Mary Gilbert's marriage). Mary Ann Gilbert, later, married Jim Roland.
With both sources at work, it's highly probable, that at one time Giles was married to Mary Ann Gilbert (born: abt 1844 in Dekalb Co, Smithville TN--died: ??) the daughter of Joseph Gilbert and Elizabeth Chambers, but if the above date is correct, she's not the Mary A and mother of 11, listed in the Dekalb Co Census records. In 1870 Giles/Jiles would have been in his early 50's and Mary Ann Gilbert about 26, so, if he is the G.D. of this marriage to Mary Ann Gilbert noted above, it's more plausible to assume that what we're looking at is his 2nd (3rd ??) marriage and his 1st was to Mary A (Chambers from Alabama??) who would have been the mother of Dabney. All of Giles' children in the Dekalb County census records, were born before 1870. It's also possible that there was a marriage prior to both Mary's (and hopefully, not to a Mary A).
So, to make sense of the numbers-- The 1850 Census lists a Mary A, as a 22 year-old white female from Tennessee, which would make her birth year about 1828. The 1860 Census lists a Mary A, as a 37 year-old female from Alabama, placing her birth year about 1823. The 1870 Census lists a Mary A, as a 45 year-old white female from Alabama who kept the house, who's birth year would fall around 1825. I doubt that this means there were 3 separate Mary A's. It's probably only one. Mistakes with numbers are common-- as they are, with any translation of scripted documents. This could also account for the two different birth states listed for Mary A. She was, probably, born about 1825 in Alabama (since it's more consistent within the census records than Tennessee).
Regarding the children: In 1850, Jiles (Giles) was already 30 years-old. His oldest child (listed) was born about 1840, when he was
Note:   Tennessee farmer born in North Carolina, who was married several times TN?? NC?
