Note: Caleb Justice disappears after the Civil War. There is no pension record available for him to indicate that he died shortly after the war. Orpha is alone on the 1870 Lawrence County, KY census living with her 4 Children. She soon remarried Oct 1870 to Marcus Mainard of Martin County. She then married again about 1875 to John Henry Williams. Circumstantial evidence has pointed toward Caleb abandoning his family for another woman that he met during the Civil War. That may explain why he deserted twice and returned. Ashamed of his behavior and wanting to be with this woman (name is believed to be Elizabeth), it is believed he went to Ohio and settled in the Lawrence County, OH area, near where his grandmother Sarah had lived. One piece of evidence which may support this theory is his son William H. Justice's 1900 Census record, states father born in Ohio. We know he was not born Ohio, but because he lived there and William's wife just knew he lived somewhere in Ohio, she probably told the census taker and he put that down as birthplace. On all other census records, William states KY as his father's birthplace. I am currently looking for a divorce record for Orpha and Caleb to prove this theory.
