Notes
a. Note:   Josiah Holly Tillett was born on April 18, 1829. His father was Thomas R. Tillett, a ship captain, and his mother was Mary "Polly" Johnson. Joe Holly, as he is known by his descendants, was raised by his mother and her second husband, Louis Mann, after his father was lost at sea during a hurricane in 1832. Joe Holly had one sister, Lovie, who married John Wescott, but he and Lovie had 6 half siblings, the children of Mary "Polly" Johnson and Louis Mann. The Tillett family had lived for several generations in Nags Head Woods. The first Tillett in the area, William Tillett, had received all of Nags Head Woods, from "Sound to Sea", in a land grant from the Lords Proprietors of North Carolina. In the 1730's, the family continued to live on the Tillett homestead even after Polly married Louis Mann. Joe Holly, as the oldest child of Thomas R. Tillett, inherited the portion of property that his grandfather Samuel Tillett had received from his father. Joe Holly raised his family on that property and his son, Tillmon Tillett, inherited the homestead after Joe Holly's death. The land was farm land, and Joe Holly was taught to farm and grow everything that he could grow. He also fished and hunted to provide for his family. There were not many jobs in the area at the time, but when his father's first cousin, Samuel Tillett, was the primary keeper at Bodie Island, Joe Holly was hired as the Assistant Keeper. When Joe Holly was appointed Assistant Keeper, he had recently married Lavina Harris, and they had the first two of their twelve children, Mary Etta and Esther while at Bodie Island. He was an experienced waterman and was an excellent choice for the Assistant Keeper. He also had a family to provide for so the job was a welcome one. Joe Holly held the Assistant Keeper position from October 24, 1859, to August 19, 1860, when he resigned his position. After Joe Holly was no longer the Assistant Keeper he went back to Nags Head Woods and fished and farmed for a living. Many family members have told stories about the amazing farming skills that Joe Holly taught his children; he and they could grow anything. All of the boys were also excellent fishermen, a skill they also learned from Joe Holly. Joe Holly and Lavina had twelve children; Mary Etta, Esther, Tillmon, Lovey, Ella, Timothy, Tedrick, Titus, Theocanus, Almedia, Josiah Holly, Jr. and Arthur Perry. Two of Joe Holly's sons, Theocanus and Joe Holly, Jr., joined the US Life Saving Service. Tedrick died as a small child. Most of the rest made their living fishing and farming as taught to them by their father Joe Holly. There are several stories about Joe Holly that have been handed down in the family. These stories tell us something of his personality. He had many friends and was close to his family. He was a strong disciplinarian and sometimes he struggled with his temper, but he was a loving father and husband. Lavina Harris Tillett died on December 8, 1880, the same day she gave birth to her twelfth child, Arthur. Josiah Holly Tillett died some nine months later on September 15 1881. It is said that he died of a broken heart after his beloved Lavina passed. They are both buried in Nags Head Woods. by Tammy Holton Jennings

TILLITT; Witness: Willis TILLETT. Registered: Oct. 26, 1858. According to Doll Briggs Younts Josiah was a very mean man, I think we have all heard the story of him picking up Levina and sitting her on the wood cook stove because his supper wasn't ready when he come home, and Doll told me that her Grandmother Marietta told Dolls Mom that he beat Levina for some small infraction and he beat her so bad that she had to be put to bed for several days. I wonder how many other stories are out there about him? He was a very nice looking man and doesn't look that mean to me.

Note:   Diane Here is a copy of the Josiah Holly Tillitt Bible, it was copied by Doll Younts daughter Charlene (who is now Register of Deeds for Currituck) when she was in the 7th grade. It is the only copy we have and no one seems to know who is possession of the Bible now, I would love to see the original!!! It gives Levinia birth and her Fathers name but not her Mothers which I have been unable to find for sure. Anyway it is what it is....here it is..... JOSIAH HOLLY TILLITT BIBLE
