Note: She was my great-aunt, married to my grandmother's brother who was Virgil Leopold Burke, Jr. She lived in Savannah and Garden City, GA. at 1 Bishop Ave. She was a teacher at Port Wentworth School for many years. Uncle Virgil died of a brain tumor caused by an injury on the railroad. Aunt Bennie died of cancer. They had no natural children, but she raised nieces named Margie and Mary Florence Kent. Diane Duvall King 7/2/2010 Aunt Bennie had three nieces who, according to my grandmother, were taken care of by her and Uncle Virgil. Marge Hornstein, one of the nieces, was mother to Julius Virgil Hornstein.(obituary below) March 10, 1994 Savannah Morning News Julius V. Hornstein HOUSTON - Julius Virgil Hornstein, 42, died Wednesday at a Houston area hospital after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Savannah and was a member of Congregation B'Nai Brith Jacob and its Brotherhood. He was a 1969 graduate of Savannah High School. He earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1974 and a doctorate degree in chemistry and nuclear engineering in 1978, both from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He enrolled in the master's degree program for executives at Columbia University in New York and earned a master of science degree in business pollcy in 1985. He was the director of the Systems Product Marketing of the North American Division of the Compaq Computer Corp. of Houston. He was responsible for leading efforts to market Compaq's Systems Products of Advanced P.C.'s and related products in North America. He also was the manager of Advanced Planning and Conectivity Software Marketing since joining Compaq in 1991. He was previously employed by Tandem Computer, Inc., Concurrent Computer Corp., The Perkin-Elmer Corp., Sandoz Pharmaceuticals and The American Cyanamid Co. Surviving are his mother, Margie Homstein of Savannah; and two aunts. Hilda Kessler and Ann Cohen, both of Savannah. Graveside service. I p.m. Friday in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah.
