Franklin Pepper, M. G. Original Certificate in Possession of Ilda Ruth Curnutt Waters, Daughter. BURIAL: "FUNERAL SERMON"; Given to Janice Curnutt Gooch by Rev. Bill Irby (These are his personal notes regarding the funeral) Sister Alcy Byrd Curnutt Introduction: A. We have gathered to manifest our respect for the memory of Sister Alcy Byrd Curnutt B. Obituary C. My involvement with this family has been limited to the last three years or so. For most of that time, Sister Curnutt has had to deal with health problems. Still, in face of all the trials she had to face she impressed me and many others with the fine characteristics of her person. Discussion: I. Sister Curnutt was a sincere person. A. Her sincerity was seen in the ways she interfaced with other people. She was the same for everybody...and it is a great compliment to be considered the same all the time. There was nothing "Fake" about her. ("Well, you could!", she said about finding someone to get her out of the hospital) B. Her sincerity was apparent in her interest in other people, particularly those of her family. She talked about you and her conversation showed she loved you and your souls. II. She was a steadfast person. A. She believed. Heb. 13: 5-6 and Rom. 8: 28 B. Even when troubled by pain she would say that it would be "all right". C. She had great and abiding faith. She would talk about Heaven and she enjoyed remembering that she was a faithful Christian, ready to go. She believed..John 14: 1-6, Heb. 11: 6, and 2 Tim. 4: 6-8 III. And she was a sweet person. A. All of us southerners know what we mean when we say someone is "sweet". We refer to a gentleness of spirit that is present even when hard things need to be done. We refer to a person who is "loving" as being a sweet person. B."Sweet", according to folks like us is the opposite of "mean". We don't miss mean folks much, but we will surely miss Sister Curnutt. Conclusion: When life is gone from us here it is the memories that will be left. It is a good, even grand, thing to be remembered as sincere, steadfast, and sweet. There is sadness for those who are left, to be sure. Take comfort in the facts of her faithfulness, God's grace, and avail yourselves of the comfort of his word. Psalms 23. Psalms 27 at Grave. Newman Curnutt born Jefferson Tenn. May 4, 1893 Memories: "MEMORIES OF MY BIGMOTHER", By Donna Waters Evans, September 2001 Bigmother was a very religious lady. She went to church as regular as clockwork while she was able. She was a strict and stern Grandmother. I can rememer being afraid of displeasing her with noise or being meddlesome. I remember when they lived at Tanner, in the big old white two-story house. It has two sets of stairs going upstairs. A central hall ran from front porch to back porch. The back porch was screened in and had a well to draw water from. The well had a platform made from rocks surrounding it. I loved that old house, with it's high ceilings and the hardwood floor in the living room, perfect for sliding across sockfooted. We sure got in trouble for that. It was heated with a coal stove. The coal pile was a great place to play, getting black coaldust on our clothes and throwing the little black chunks at each other. And there was a squirrlel in a tree in the front of the house. Of course, we got in trouble for throwing rocks at it too. The house is still there. My Mom and I stopped to look at it. It is condemned now. It made me so sad to see the toll time and neglect had had had on it. It sits there silent, empty and forlorn, the paint peeling, and windows broken out. In my thoughts, I can still see the dhildren running down the hallway, letting the screen door slam behind them. As I got older, my perceptions of Bigmother changed. She went from being my Grandmother to being a friend. We used to exchange letters on a regular basis. Nothing much, just family news and "Hello, how are you?" I wish now that I had kept them. In the last few years she lived, my Mother and I went every Thursday to see her. She was still as quarrelsome and stern as she always was. But my feelings had changed. I guess I understood her more. She wasn't affectionate while I was growing up, but as she and I both aged, we told each other that we loved the other. It is so important for family to know that. And it isn't just a given. It should be said out loud and often. I missed her so much at first, going to see her every week, listening to her talk, not always understanding her views, but realizing they were important. I think of her often, with regret that she is gone and there is no more time to tell her how I feel. And with love in my heart for the woman she was and the memories she has given me, enough to last a lifetime.
