Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Ball, lifelong residents of Limestone County, were feted on their golden anniversary Thursday at the Limestone Nursing Home. They have resided at the nursing home for the last three years. The husband observed his 82nd birthday Aug. 10. His wife, the former Miss Gracie Harris, was 74 on June 11. Though his wife has been an invalid for a number of years, Mr. Ball is in fair health, and recalls many events of the early 1900s. "I was too old for World War I, but the last draft call got me," he said. "However, the war ended before I was called up". He and his wife married in December after the armistice of Nov. 11, 1918, ended what was then called"the Great War". "At the time of our marriage, both of us were living six or seven miles from Athens on the new cut," Ball recalls. "We drove into town and were married in a building on the square used as a courthouse while the present courthouse was being built." :"Athens was real small and I doubt there were a thousand people living in the town in 1918. I remember a general store operated by four men - Martin, Ritzen, and McGavick and the other I can't recall". Lakin Hightower, Bruce Nelson and Luke ROgers are other Athens businessmen Ball remembers from the early days. A farmer all his life until his retirement 15 years ago, Ball remembers loading cotton at the L & N Depot."We didn't have electricity or gas on the farms in those days".
