  DEATH: "OBITUARY", Moulton Advertiser, July 1918, Moulton, Lawrence County, Alabama (Sent as a Letter to the Editor) Dear Mr. Editor, Will you give me a little space in your paper to pay the last tribute to the recent death of M. V. Shelton? Mr. Shelton went to visit a sister in Arkansas that he had not seen in 35 years and died while out there. His remains were brought back to Sivley Graveyard and buried. The father has five sons, two sisters, and one brother to mourn his loss. Mr. Shelton was a true, patriotic citizen, loved by everyone that knew him. He first applied February 26, 1892 in Winston County, Alabama. He applied again on May 13, 1893, also in Winston County. He was approved on February 10, 1899, and placed on the Class 4 Pension Rolls for Winston County. He requested to being placed on a higher Class Roll on July 6, 1910. In October of 1914, his pension was challenged by the Pension Board of Examiners as to the charge of desertion. He furnished affidavits from witnesses and managed to continue his pension.) Shelton, respectfully represents that his name is on the pension rolls of said County as a 4th Class pensioner, that since he was placed in the 4th Class he has suffered injuries and loss of health that has very greatly increased his disabilities, and on that account he files this, his petition asking that he be advanced to a higher class on said pension roll. That he is now 70 years old. That he was wounded at the battle of Seven Pines by an exploded shell, one part of which went through the left side of his bowels and lodged in the hip bone, and another piece crushed the right shoulder bone , and taking off a part of it, that now there is no union between the shoulder and the collar bone. That about 4 years ago he received a fall from which his right leg was broken above the knees. That at the time his leg was broken, a bale of cotton fell on him, from which he sustained internal injuries, and from that time he has suffered greatly from Hemorrhoids and Rheumatism. Shelton enlisted in the spring of 1862, in Company �C� - 22nd Georgia, in Wright�s Brigade, Bill Mahone division at Hills Corps, and I know that he was gone in the war until in December 1864, when he came home on a furlough for sixty days, and while he was at home he was taken very sick with the measles and remained at home very sick until the spring of 1865, and that he received a parole at the close of the war. I have seen his parole many times and know that he was paroled. After he had the measles, he had a relapse and was unable to return to the war. Shelton was absent without leave from his command since December 22, 1864, No Later record of his found�. He states that he was a member of Co. C Georgia Inf. And that he enlisted in Co. C in spring of 1862 and served as a soldier from then until in December in 1864, just four months before the surrender when I was furloughed home. While at home I was taken sick with the measles and was very sick after I was about to get well I had relapse and was unable to join the army any more before the surrender. I also had a rison in my left ear and from that time I have been deaf in that ear. I was still at home when they surrendered but my brother, J. M. Shelton brought my parole to me and I received a parole from my commanding officer and had it for some time but have lost it. Signed - M. V.
