D. 1917 The Grand Jury of said County charge that, before the finding of this indictment, George Gillespie and Jay Gillespie wrongfully and with malice aforethought did assault John Shelton with the intent to murder him, against the peace and dignity of the State of Alabama. Jackson, Clerk THE STATE OF ALABAMA, LAWRENCE COUNTY, Circuit Court To any Sheriff of the State of Alabama---Greeting: An indictment having been found at the March Term, 1917, of the Circuit Court of Lawence County, against George Gillespie and Jay Gillespie for the offense of assault with intent to murder. You are therefore commanded forthwith to arrest the said George Gillespie and Jay Gillespie and commit them to jail, unless they make bond, and make return of this Writ according to law. Jackson, Clerk # 6090 THE STATE VS George Gillespie Jay Gillespie March 14th, 1917 Came the State by its Solicitor and the defendants in their own proper person, and the defendants being arraigned in open court by having the indictment read over to them for their plea thereto says that they are not guilty, upon which plea the Solicitor joins issue. Thereupon came a jury of good and lawl men to-wit: Elijah D. Hatten and eleven others who have been duly empaneled and sworn according to law well and truly the issues to try and true verdicts render upon their oaths do say we the jury find the defendants guilty of assault with a weapon and fix their fines at fifty dollars each. It is thereupon ordered and adjudged by the court that the defendants are guilty of an assault with a weapon and that their fines be and hereby are fifty dollars each. Thereupon came the defendants into open court and confessed judgement in favor of the State of Alabama for use of Lawrence County for said fines besides all costs of said prosecution. It is therefore ordered and adjudged by the court that the State of Alabama for use of Lawrence County have and recover of the defendants said fines besides all costs of this prosecution. Said fines and costs being paid in open court.
