MEMORIES: "MEMORIES of WILLIAM DONALD CURNUTT, Sr.", By Ilda Ruth Curnutt Waters, August 2001 When I was about seven or eight,we lived At Pete's Corner, a little neighborhood in rural Limestone County, Alabama. A store sat on the corner of the crossroads. We lived in a house behind the store. There was a big old barn beside our house that fronted on another road. There was a huge, hard plie of packed red dirt beside the barn. Across the road was a church attended by blacks. I can remember sitting on that pile of dirt and watching the colored people strolling up and down the road, shouting their religion. All of the black women carried a blade. Usually a switch-blade. I can remember a black couple who lived down the road. One night, the man came pounding on our door. He was yelling," Mr. Don, Mr. Don, I done cut my Lillian's throat." He had slit her throat from ear to ear. I remember seeing her later, with that scar running across her throat. My father worked at a blacksmith shop, owned by his step-father, Ira Terry. The shop was on the northwest side of the crossroads next door to the gin. The scales, where they weighed the cotton, was across the road from our house. The owner, my step-grandfather, had just bought an electric planer. My father was using the planer on a piece of wood when he hit a knot in the wood. His had slipped and he cut off the end of his finger on the planer. It happened on my seventh birthday, June 7, 1943. He wore a leather pouch over the end of his finger for years to protect an exposed nerve. Sources: "PLACES OF RESIDENCE", By Mary Jean Curnutt Grissom, eldest daughter of William D.
