  Policeman, By-Stander are shot
SAN BENITO -- A gun waving man Wednesday shot a city policeman in the hand and hit a by-stander twice in the leg before he could be halted late Wednesday in a San Benito tavern on Diaz and Robertson Sts. Francisco Ramarez Menchaca, 41, a bracero was shot twice through the calf of his right leg as he aided officer R. C. (Pappy) Ridgell in taking a gun away from Armando Macias Teran, 24, of San Benito. Toran slumped over a table in the tavern, raised up and began firing the pistol wildly when Ridgell approached him. With the assistance of Menchaca, Ridgell managed to knock down the man, still waving the pistol. The gun, a foriegn make 9mm automatic, jammed and Ridgell grabbed it and after a brief sttruggle brought the man under control. Ridgell and Menchaca both were admitted to Dolly Vinsant hospital. Ridgell was released after treatment. The bullet, hospital attendants said, pierced only the flesh without causing any damage to the bones. Menchaca was to remain in the hospital. Teran also was treated for minor cuts and bruises he had received in the fracas. He later told officer Ronald Tandy the reason he had a gun, which he had purchased Tuesday in Harlingen, was that he was tired of being teased about a physical disorder and that he was not going to "take it any longer." Tandy said an extra clip containing nine rounds of ammunition was found on Teran after his arrest. Charges of Assault with intent to murder will be filed against Teran, Police Chief Bill Gilbert said.
