Note: William Thompson Shelby remained at home during the Civil War to look after the family affairs. Like his brother, David, he never married. _____ Newport Hoosier State Thursday, November 20, 1873 William Shelby, of Eugene Township, residing near the Army Ford, died about 1 o'clock p.m. on Wednesday of last week, of congestion of the bowels, after an illness of only a few days, at the age of 44 years, 11 months, and 9 days. Mr. Shelby was a quiet and peaceful citizen, and was much respected by everyone. He was honest, and temperate in his habits, and by skillful economizing in business had accumulated a fortune of about $150,000. He was a farmer by occupation, and had a great many tenants under his employ, and they all, without a dissenting voice, say he was the most courteous and kind hearted man that ever lived upon the face of the globe. Everybody speaks well of him and regret that such a valuable citizen should be stricken down in the prime of manhood. His burial, which took place on last Friday, was very largely attended. His remains were interred in the private burial ground, near his late residence. The funeral services were conducted by a minister from Danville, IL. _____ Will Abstract, Vermillion County, IN Book 2, Page 359, 360 William Shelby, Vermillion County, IN Written January 14, 1873 1.
