The August 29, 1890 Sumner Herald reported: "C. F. Dickenson is erecting a new barn." In 1899, during the Alaska gold rush, he left his wife with their five children to live a meager existence and went to Nome, Alaska with his father, brother and sisters. The 1900 Pierce Co., Washington census lists Etta Dickenson as the head of the household. The 1907 and 1909 Tacoma City Directories list Etta Dickenson "widow of Charles" as living at 6438 S. Warner with her children Chester, Clarice, Leslie and Zeta. In 1922, Etta moved to San Francisco where her sons, Chester Sherwood and Charles Leslie had previously moved. The 1922 San Francisco City Directory lists Etta "(widow of Charles)" as living at 179-20th Ave. She lived at that address until 1929 when she moved to 645-47th Ave. where she lived until she died in 1943. She was consistently listed in the city directories as "widow of Charles" as was she on her death certificate when she died in San Francisco on November 26, 1943 at the age of 83. While one could conclude that Charles Franklin had died in Alaska, his father Joseph Rives Dickenson's obituary in the Saturday, August 10, 1912 Tacoma Tribune, listed him as living in Three Forks, Montana. He next appeared in the 1931 San Francisco City Directory where he was listed as a houseman living at 252-6th St. In 1932 he was listed as a laborer at the same address and in subsequent years at other addresses. From 1943 to when he died at the age of 84 on November 19, 1946, he was listed in the San Francisco City Directory as living at 377-6th St. His death certificate indicated that he had been a resident of San Francisco and California for 25 years (since about 1921). _____ CITY DIRECTORY REFERENCES TO THE FAMILY OF CHARLES FRANKLIN DICKENSON: 1907: Chester S.
