Note: N36544 Mrs. James Theodore Parson Martin May 22, 1923-May 6, 2011 Conway, S.C. Mrs. James Theodore Parson Martin, 87, of Elbow Road died Friday, May 6, 2011 at her residence after struggling for almost 15 years with after effects of a stroke and cerebral hemorrhage. Mrs. Martin was born May 22, 1923 in the Henry community of Williamsburg County, S.C., a daughter of the late James "Jim" Edward and Nora Lilly Jane Pope Parson. She spent her early years growing up on the cotton mill villages of McColl, S.C., where she attended elementary school. In 1937, her father brought the family to the Williams Hill community of Georgetown County, where they sharecropped. On November 16, 1941, she married Leo Joseph Martin, Sr. of the Pawley Swamp community who she met during memorable visits to her uncle and aunt Dock and Adria Pope Beverlys. She and Leo lived in Horry County until they moved to Georgetown shortly after the death of their nine month old son, Robert Wayne Martin in 1951. She worked at the Georgetown Laundry for 26 and ? years. In 1989, she and Leo moved back to Horry County, where she was a member of Pauley Swamp Baptist Church. She spent her last years working hard in her yard and cooking for her family. Since her stroke, she loved to testify to anyone and everyone how good the Lord had been to her. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and infant son; as well as a sister, Olene Parson Cooper; a brother, Don Parson; and two half sisters, Ella Parson Howell and Sulla Parson Hannah. Surviving are her children Leo Joseph "Joe" Martin, Jr. and his wife, Dolores, of Conway, Barbara Ann Martin Sessions and her husband, Wesley, of Conway, Mitchell Graydon "Grady" Martin and his wife, Irene, of Yauhannah, James Franklin "Frankie" Martin of Sumter, and Roger Dale Martin and his wife, Susan, of Myrtle Beach; grandchildren, Christie Sessions Carver and her husband, David, Mike Martin, Mitchell Martin, Kelly Martin Holmes, Mark Martin, Clint Martin, Jennifer Martin Hungerford and husband, Noah, Suzanne Martin Rogers and her husband, Mark, Paige Martin and Mary Nora Martin; great-grandchildren, Michelle and Traci Carver and Tabatha and Calista Holmes. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 9, 2011 from Pawley Swamp Baptist Church with the Rev. Terrance Grainger officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday, May 8, 2011.
