Note: Birth: Jan. 18, 1838 Bledsoe County Tennessee, USA Death: Oct. 8, 1861 Huntersville Pocahontas County West Virginia, USA John was born, 1838, in Pikeville, Bledsoe Co., Tenn. the 6th of the 9 children born to Stephen Gallant Hankins and Lucy Smith Hankins, who came to Tenn. from Va. and N.C. respectively. John's family were surely believers of freedom, 2 of his brothers were named Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry. In 1860 John was working as a laborer and living in Spencer, TN. When the war came to Tenn. John enlisted in the 8th Tenn. Infantry, Co. I. On May 20, 1861 he was sworn in at Camp Harris in Franklin Co. And with the rest of the men buried here he left the Tenn. farm of his father and marched off to secure Southern freedom. Their dream died with them in this place from Disease - an enemy as deadly as a minie ball. His brother Thomas enlisted in the 2nd Regiment, Tenn. Cavalry. Thomas survived the war and named his first child John.
