Notes
a. Note:   Jean (John) JAMES (JACQUES) (Louis Joseph, Evrard, Claude) was born on 9 Jul 1839 in Menil, Chassepierre, Luxembourg. He died on 16 Aug 1863 at Markham Plantation, Mississippi.
John enlisted into the 93rd Regiment, Company G, of the Indiana Volunteers on August 28, 1862, at Cannelton, Indiana. He was trained at New Albany and Madison, Indiana. John suffered from an illness for several months and was home on sick leave from November, 1862 until August 1, 1863. He joined his Regiment in Mississippi and died at Markhams Plantation, Big Bear Creek, Mississippi, of continuous fevers, on August 16, 1863. Elizabeth married August J. Dupont on April 2, 1866. August was also in Company G. of the 93rd Regiment. Elizabeth died on May 12, 1904 and August died on January 7, 1907. Mary was raised in the Dupont household along with 14 half brothers and sisters; Mary Henrietta, Sarah Alice, Henry, Theresa, Mary Ann, Mary Josephine, Edmund Peter Joseph, August, Alphons, Robert Frank Curran, William Paul, Emma Sarah, Margaret, Mary Louise and Louis John Dupont.
On Sept.18, 2003, Ann and I visited the area of Markhams Plantation. We talked to area residents. David Allen, a descendent of a past owner told a little history of the place but did not know where the plantation house stood. There is an overgrown cemetery nearby. The county records for this time period are in Leflore County. There is no town of Markham but a church of that name is about 3 miles outside of Indianola, Mississippi. Markhams Station is on the Illinois Central RR in Sunflower County, Mississippi.

Reference 43, Item 3, shows 10 Jul 1839 birth record of Jean, son of Louis Joseph Jacques, 30, and Anne Marie Bissot in Menil, Luxembourg (Commune of Chassepierre, Canton of Florenville). The 10 July record shows he was born the previous day - 9 July.
Name from Reference 14 Marriage Record of Jean marriage to Elisabeth Rhods. Jean Jacque is shown as the son of Ludovici (Louis) Joseph Jacque and Marie Bristot. Marriage record contains footnote that reads "The Jacque being ashamed of their name, call themselves in this county, James. John Jacque of course is John James."
Reference 33, (Adjutant General Report page 512) shows 93rd Reg, Company G: John J. James, residence of Leopold, Private, Mustered in on 28 Aug 1862, died at Markham's Plantation on 16 Aug 1863. According to Vol III of the Adjutant General Report, the 93rd was in Mississippi camped at the Big Black River (Big Black River is between Vicksburg and Jackson) at the time that he died. According to "The Union Army, Vol 6", the Battle of Jackson was underway from 10 - 17 July and resulted in 762 wounded. There was a Markham Plantation approximately 100 miles north of Vicksburg/Jackson, Mississippi. The area is now the town of Markham, Mississippi.
The Widow's Declaration for Pension (and associated paperwork) for John J. James, who served in Comp G, 93rd Indiana, exists for his widow, Elizabeth James, dated 20 Mar 1866. It lists his death at "Camp of Big Bear Creek in the State of Mississippi" on 16 Aug 1863.
There is also a 25 Apr 1879 claim for minor child pension by Francis Claudel, Guardian of Mary J. James. (Elizabeth's mother's name was Claudelle. Francis Claudel has not been identified yet but could be Elizabeth's uncle or cousin.)
The following information is contained in his pension file: John J. James was enrolled on the 28th day of August 1862 at Cannelton in Compnay G, 93rd Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, to serve 3 years or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 30th day of September 1862 at New Albany, Ind in Co. G, 93rd Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, to serve 3 years or during the war. On the Muster Roll of Go. G. for the Regiment, for the months of July and August 1863, he is reported "died at Big Bear Creek Miss. Aug 16th 1863." Cause of Death not stated in the Muster Roll. The Widow's Declaration for Pension shows that he served under Capt. Spillman and that the cause of his death was chills and fevers. It shows that his surname was listed as "Jeim" on the county marriage record, "Jacque" on the church marriage record and he enlisted as "James". An additional affidavit filed on 25 Apr 1879 shows that Elizabeth James is now Elizabeth Dupont and that Mary J. James is still living and residing with her mother. Papers filed later show Elizabeth Dupont requesting a pension from the date of her first husband's death to the date of her second marriage with August Dupont on 2 Apr 1866. The record also includes an affidavit filed by Eugene Devillez, who was a member of the same Company and was with John James on the day of his death at Markham Plantation, lists John James death as "hemerage of the lungs". Devillez nursed him for several days before his death. The record also includes an affidavit from Alphonse Dupont (brother of August Dupont) who was also a member of the Company and present at John James' death. The records also show that his father's name was Joseph L. James, he had a brother August James in Company D, 35th and his brother Amable James was in the same Regiment with him and died in the war.
Reference 55 shows that he was sick from enlistment and sent on sick leave at Leopold in Nov and Dec 1862. In Jan and Feb 1863, was absent sick without leave. Returned to the Company on Aug 2, 1863. Died Aug 16, 1863.
