Nicolas James is referred to as Nicolas Jacque in a baptismal record for his daughter, M. Theresa, in the St. Augustine Catholic Church records of Leopold Indiana. In 1860 Indiana, Perry County, Leopold Township Census (conducted on 27 July 1860) Nicholas was listed as 12 years old and born in Belgium. The 1870 Census lists Nicholas, Age 21, born in Belgium, occupation Farmer. He is living in Clark Township, Perry Co., Indiana with wife and daughter. The 1880 Census lists Nicholas James, age 31, born in France, occupation Farmer, living in Clark Township, Perry County, IN. His household includes wife Dilphin, age 31, born in France, Mary, age 11; John, age 9; Emly, age 6; Magga, age 4; and Joseph, age 1; all born in Indiana. Not clear yet if this was the same Nicholas. In 1862, he would have only been 14 years old. Reference 89 shows obituary in 30 Mar 1923 edition of Tell City News and will in 7 Apr 1923 edition of Cannelton Enquirer. The 30 Mar 1923 edition of the Tell City News contains front page death notice which reads: "Mr. Nicholas James -- Veteran of Civil War Dies Suddenly at His Home in This City --- Mr. Nicholas James, a veteran of the Civil War and prominent citizen of this city, passed away suddenly last Friday evening, his death being due to heart trouble. There had been many rumors of Mr. James' serious illness but during the past two or three weeks he apparently had recovered and was seen about town almost every day. Just a few minutes previous to his death he went across the way to the home of a neighbor to take him a bucket of coal and on the return trip fell dead just before reaching his home. Mr. James was born in Belgium and came to this country with his parents when a lad of about five years of age. They moved to Leopold township and he grew up there on a farm. As a matter of fact, practically his entire life was spent on the farm with the exception of the past eleven years which have been spent in this city. He was 75 years of age. Soon after the outbreak of the Civil War he answered the call of Lincoln for volunteers and at the close of the war was given an honorable discharge and came back to Perry county where he has since made his home. Mr. James is survived by his aged wife and the following children: Mrs. Jennie Bouchie of Melstone, Mont.; Mrs. Mary Franceville fo Casper, Wyoming; Mrs. Emma Holman of Leopold, Mrs. Maggie Cassidy of Apalona, John P. of Mt. Carmel, Ill., Joseph E. of Branchiville, Dr. N.A. of this city and Henry of Louisville. Mr. James was a devout member of the Catholic church throughout his entire life, and since he retired and came to this city, he very seldom missed church services when able to attend. The funeral was held at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning at St. Paul's Catholic church. Interment at St. Mary's." The 7 Apr 1923 edition of the Cannelton Enquirer gives the Last Will and Testament of Nicholas James of Tell City. He left all of his property (except 50$ to St. Paul's Catholic Church for masses) to his wife Mary D. James. The Will stipulated that after the death of his wife, the property will be divided among children: Emma Holman; Mary Franchville, John P. James, Maggie Cassidy, Joe James, Henry James and Nicholas A. James. A copy of the will is on file. Nicholas married Mary Delphine (Marie Adelphine) PONSART, daughter of Barthelemi PONSART and Mary Theresa FOURY, on 7 Sep 1868 in Perry County, Indiana. Mary was born on 18 Aug 1848 in Mortehan, Cugnon, Luxembourg. She died on 12 Apr 1925 in Tell City, IN and was buried on 15 Apr 1925 in St. Mary's Cemetery, Tell City, Indiana. Reference 68, Item 7, shows 19 Aug 1848 birth record of Marie Adelphine Ponsart, born yesterday, daughter of Barthelemi Ponsart, age 31, living in Mortehan, and Marie Therese Fourier, his wife, age 32. The 1860 Census shows Delphine Ponsard, an eleven year old living with Barthol and Mary Ponsard in Leopold Township, Perry County, Indiana on 27 July 1860. Her birth place was listed as Belgium. She married John Julius Hubert in Jan 1866. According to Reference 55, they were divorced in Oct 1867 in Cannelton, IN. The 1870 Census lists Delphina, Age 21, born in Belgium, occupation "Keeping House" and living with Nicholas James and daughter. The census also lists a Mary J. Heusbert (illegible last name), Age 4, born in Indiana, who is also living with Nicholas and Delphine. The 1880 Census lists Nicholas James' household in Clark Township, Perry County, IN. His household includes wife Dilphin, age 31, born in France. The 1900 Census lists Delphine, wife of Nicholas James, born Aug 1852, married 32 years, born in France with parents born in France. The census record shows her immigrating in "150", living in the US for 48 years (implies 1852 immigration), and a naturalized citizen. The 1920 Census for Tell City, Troy township, Perry county Indiana shows the Nicholas James household. Delphina, his wife, is listed as 71, born in France, parents born in France, immigrated to the US in 1853. Record in LDS AF indicates marriage on 9/7/1868 but name was listed as Delfine Poncard. Baptismal record of her daughter M. Theresa Jacque, indicated that Delphine was also married to another man. (No name listed.) Reference 16 gives marriage record of Mary Delphine Ponsard to Jean (or Julius) Hubert. This Hubert surname is likely the same as "Heusbert" shown in the 1870 census for the 4 year old child (implies 1866 birth year) living with Nicolas James and Delphina James. Reference 15 shows baptism record for daughter Maria Eugenia in 1866. This could be a "Mary Jean" or "Mary J." from the 1870 Census. Reference 32 (Vol 1, page 229) shows Delphine James, born 1848, died 1925, buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Tell City, IN.
