  John Thompson was a Civil War veteran.
  He was injured while in the army at Paducah, Kentucky by explosion of smoking pipe charged with gun powder. He suffered burns to the eyes and was blind later in life from this. John lived in Crawford County until 1894 then he moved to Branchville, Perry County, then to Orange County in 1906.
  John K. Thompson enrolled as a private in Company H, 23rd Regiment, Indiana Volunteers at Alton, Indiana on the 16th day of July, 1861. He was mustered into the military service at New Albany, Indiana on July 27th, 1861, for 3 years, at age 21. The 23 Regiment left Indiana for Paducah, Kentucky on August 15, 1861, there until February, 1862.
  Demonstrated from Paducah to Columbus, Kentucky Nov., 7-9, 1861. Moved to Fort Donelson, Tenn. Feb. 12-15, 1862. Expedition toward Purdy and operations about Crumps Landing, Tennessee, March 9-14. Battle of Shiloh, Tenn., April 6-7. Advance on and siege of Corinth, Mississippi April 29- May 30. March to Purdy then to Bolivar, Tenn. and duty there till September. March to Iuka, Miss., Sept. 1-20. Duty in District of Jackson till Nov. Grant's Central Mississippi Campaign Nov. 2, 1862 to Jan. 10, 1863. Reconnaissance from Lagrange Nov 8-9, 1862. Moved to Memphis Jan. 20, 1863 then to Lake Providence, La. Feb 21 and to Millikens Bend, La., April 17. Passage to Vicksburg and Warrenton Batteries April, 22. Movement on Bruinsburg and Grand Gulf April 25-30. Battle of Port Gibson, Miss., May 1. Bayou Pierre, May 3, Ingraham's Heights May 3. Bruinsburg May 6. Battle of Raymond May 12.
