a. Note:   August JAMES (JACQUES) (Louis Joseph, Evrard, Claude) was born on 19 Jun 1842 in Menil, Chassepierre, Luxembourg. He died on 21 Feb 1910 in Clark Township, Perry County, IN and was buried in St. John's Cemetery, Perry Co., IN.
  Reference 12 (Item 4 - Chassepierre) shows an Auguste Jacques born 20 June 1842. (There is also a Louis
  Auguste born 15 Dec 1845. However, a Louis Auguste remained in Belgium and married in 1881.)
  Reference 43, Item 4, shows 20 Jun 1842 birth record of Auguste Jacques birth. The record shows Louis Joseph Jacques, age 32, "journalier domicilie", and Anne Marie Bissot, age 33, declaring the birth of their son named Auguste at Menil, Commune of Chassepierre, Canton of Florenville. He is shown as being born the prior day - 19 June. Witnesses were Jean Jacques, 53, "marchand epiner" and Louis Joseph Saute, 30, "proprietaire".
  Listed in 1860 Census as living in Leopold Township, Perry County, Indiana with age of 18. Occupation listed as Farm Laborer. Was living with father and mother on 27 July 1860 (Census date). This implies a birth year around 1842.
  Reference 60 contains General Index Card for August James, Company D, 35th Indiana Infantry, with rank of Private.
  Reference 33 (page 140) shows that a Private August James from Leopold, IN, was mustered into Company D, 35th Indiana Regiment Infantry, on 8 Oct 1861, was a "veteran", and was mustered out on 30 Sep 1865.
  Civil War pension information (as reported by "Belgians in the American Civil War) shows August as 5 feet 8 inches, light complexion, brown hair, dark eyes, born 1844 in Chassepierre, father Joseph James, mother Marie Bistot, married to Marie Antoinette Jacobs on 16 Nov 1865 by Father Dion in Leopold. Other notes indicate that he was the son of Louis Jacques, emigrated with his parents in 1854 for Leopold, Indiana. Some information on his 35th Regiment, Company D, shows when the company reached near Louisville, Kentucky, in the fall of 1862, from McMinville, Tenn, in a march pursuing the army of General Bragg, nearly all the members of said company were more or less disabled and worn out. Auguste James had to be tranported on the wagons, on account that he was unable to follow the Regiment on march. On Dec 23, 1862, he was detailed as a teamster in the Division wagon train (ammunition) to lighter duty as he was unable to stand the marches. He reenlisted as veteran on Dec 16, 1863. In May 1864, he was again detached as Division teamster until mustered out. (References National Archives Invalid application 562975 Cert. 937527 and Widow application 366491.)   Marriage record (Ref 14) of August to Marie Antonette shows August's parents as Joseph James (Jacque) and Marie Bristoh.
  The 1880 Census shows an August Jeems, age 35, born in Belgium, farmer living in Leopold Township, Perry County, IN. In his household is living his wife Mary, age 33, born in Belgium; daughter Harriet, age 13; Joseph, age 11; Victor, age 9; Franklin, age 7; Mary, age 5; August, age 3, born in Indiana.
  The 1900 Census shows August James, born Jun 1840, Age 59, in Belgium, father and mother born in Belgium, married 35 years, 12 children (7 still living in 1900), arrived in the US in 1854, was a naturalized citizen. August is living in Leopold Township, Perry County, in Census Residence #31.
  Reference 32 (Vol 2, page 156) shows August James, born 1842, died 21 Feb 1910, born in Manie, Belgium, buried at St. John's Cemetery near Bristow, IN. The village of Manie has not been located. The name "Manie" may be an americanized version of "Menil".
  Reference 89 shows three obituaries for August James in the 26 Feb 1910 edition of the Cannelton Enquirer, the 2 Mar 1910 edition of the Tell City Journal, and in the 3 Mar 1910 edition of the Cannelton Telephone.
  The 3 Mar 1910 edition of the Cannelton Telephone gives his death notice. It reads: "Mr. August James died suddenly on Monday morning of last week at his home near St. John's church, som 2 1/2 miles from Bristow. He and his wife lived alone but nearby, one of his sons resides. Mrs. James was reading to her husband from a prayer-book when suddenly she saw him stoop over as if he were picking up something. Failing to rise again she approached him and found him dead. He was 68 years of age and a good citizen. Coroner Snyder was summoned from Troy and after having made an autopsy pronounced the cause of his death, apoplexy. Deceased had never been sick any during his life. He leaves a widow and several children. The funeral took place from St. John's church of which congregation he was a member on Tuesday. Burial in the churchyard nearby."
  The 26 Feb 1910 edition of the Cannelton Enquirer contains a similar article on his death - titled Prominent
  Farmer of Clark Township Dies Suddenly - August James, a Well-Known Farmer of Clark Township, Expires Suddenly of Apoplexy. Article is similar that the Cannelton Telephone news article with the only different information was that "August James suddenly toppled from his seat last Monday morning about 10 o'clock and expired instantly. With him at the time of his sudden death was his wife who was reading to her husband from a paper." The article also states that his farm was about 4 miles from Bristow and about 3 miles west of Leopold.

  Biography : Son of Louis JACQUES, emigrated with his parents in 1854 for Leopold, Indiana.
  When the company reached to near Louisville, Kentucky, in the fall of 1862, from Mc Minville, Tenn., in a march pursuing the army of General Braggs, nearly all the members of the said company were more or less disabled and worn out. Auguste James had to be transported on the wagons, on account that he was unable to follow the Regiment on march. He was on Dec. 23, 1862 detailed as teamster in the Division wagon train(ammunition), to lighter duty as he was unable to stand the marches. He reenlisted as veteran on December 16, 1863. In may 1864, he was anew detached as Division teamster till mustered out.
