In 1861 he was a stone mason at West Grimsby, Arbroath; son James was an apprentice stone mason and daughter Jane a flax mill worker. In 1871 he was a mason residing at 14 Shoreward, Arbroath with his wife Ann and 8 children. In 1881 he was a stone mason and widower living at 14 Howard Street, St. Vigeans with his children Jessie (flax reeler in a mill), Isabella (flax spinner in a mill), Peter (unemployed tinsmith), and Annie (flax shifter in a mill).
  Informant on John's death certificate was his son Peter Doig, 74 John Street, Aberdeen.
