a. Note:   Hardin County, Kentucky was formed in 1793. It is located in the Pennyrile region of the state, elevation ranges from 383 to 1017 feet above sea level. In 1990 the county population was 89,240 in a land area of 628 square miles, an average of 142.1 people per square mile. The county seat is Elizabethtown.
 Elizabethtown was founded in 1795 and names for the wife of Colonel Andrew Hynes. An earlier settlement had been known as Severns Valley, for John Severns, a local settler and surveyor. The first post office opened in 1804 and may have first been known as Hardin Court House. The population in 1990 was 18,167.
 Kentucky was admitted to the Union on Friday, June 1, 1972. Seceded Wednesday, November 20, 1861. Capital: Frankfort. Motto: United We Stand, Divided We Fall.
