Note: Will of Howard Cash, Amherst Co., VA Will Book #1, pp 228-231 The general context of the will is: To wife Ruth: Eight Negroes (Joseph, Cate, James, Charles, Sall, Dinah, Dick & David) natural life. Also left the land and plantation whereon they lived. Son Joell Cash was given 100 acres of land joining the land on which he lives and two Negroes (Phil & Dick, a boy which said boy Dick I give to my grandson Howard, the son of Joell Cash, after the Death of my said son, Joel). To daughter Mary Lively a Negro wench named Sarah. To son Benjamin 400 acres of land adjacent to land that is at present the property of Capt Aaron Higginbotham, and the land whereon I live and also a Negro fellow named James whom I purchased of Mr. Thomas Mitchel. Lend to daughter Rosanna a Negro wench named Fellis during her life and after her decease to my grandson Micajah. Lend to daughter Ann Powell a young Negro wench named Peg during her life and after her decease to her heirs. Son Robert: 240 acres of land lying between the land whereon I live and Stephen Cashes land moreover. Son Robert: 400 acres of land which I have left to my wife after her decease and a Negro fellow named John, also a bed and furniture, and two cows. Daughter Maryann: A Negro boy named Ralph, also bed, furniture, a cow, and a colt. Daughter Ruth: A Negro girl named Nell, a fed and furniture, a cow, a calf. Daughter Elizabeth Nuckles: 30 pounds to be raised out of my Estate which I willed to my wife, to be paid in ten years by an order for 3 pounds a year upon some merchant as soon as it becomes due.
