a. Note:   Edward Howchens is one of the first names found in Virginia records, and it is from him that most of the Houchins in this country are descended from. It is not known when he came to America from England. In 1686, he was living in New Kent Co., Virginia as a Parishioner of St. Peter's Parish. The originial register of St. Peter's Parish is in the Virginia Theological Seminary at Alexandria, Virginia, and it contains the names of Edward Howchens and his wife Rebecca. The records of New Kent Co., were burned in 1866 and with their loss, all further records of this Edward Howchens and his family. He owned land in St. James Parish, Northam in Goochland Co., VA.
