Notes
a. Note:   Essie Dee Brock married Claude Douglass, September 09, 1914 on the front porch of her parents house in Victoria County. They were 17 years old and had dated only 3 months. Grandpa Brock said it would never last, however, the union lasted 62 years. When Claude was " sparking " ( courting ) Dee, he would come calling in a buggy which had 2 small front wheels and 2 large back wheels. One time, Em and Luther " Buddy " switched the wheels from the front to the back. This made the buggy very difficult to turn, so when Claude left after dark he had to go way out of his way to make wide turns to get home. And of course, he had to switch the wheels back the next day.
After Claude and Dee married, they moved to Sugar Land where Claude worked for Captain Flannagan farming and working cattle. In the early 1920's, he went to work for Imperial Sugar, where he worked for 47 years. He enjoyed his work and his family. In the early years, they lived mostly in " OLD " Sugar Land on and around Main Street in Imperial Sugar housing. Later they built a house on five acres on McKaskle Road on the outskirts of Sugar Land. Claude took many a grandkid on horseback, buggy, and wagon rides there. In those days Dee " skimmed " the cream from the cows milk to make butter. They grew corn, tomatoes and black eyed peas in the garden. They also had dogs, cats, and a parakeet that kept Dee company. The grandkids could always get a " red beer" (BIG RED soda water ) at Maw Maw and Paw Paw's house. Dee enjoyed knitting, watching sports on TV and was a great baseball and football fan. In her 70's, she learned to swim and visited Australia.[Broderbund Family Archive #110, Vol. 1 A-K, Ed. 7, Social Security Death Index: U.S., Date of Import: Jul 18, 2000, Internal Ref. #1.111.7.72674.46]
