Notes
a. Note:   William Christian Knauer had 3 wives and the true relationship of the children to one another is unknown at present.
According to Edna Dickinson who interviewed Dr. Knauer [son of Wm. C. Knauer, Jr.] in Jacksonville, his grandfather [William Christian Knauer, Sr] came over and took Dr. Knauer on a visit to Germany when he was a boy. He remembers the town Gotha well. Says it's off the beaten tourist track, but very beautiful. He stayed in the building that housed the store:
 A. Knauer Materialwaarenhandlung I [Edna Dickinson] have a photograph of the building with six men standing in front {postcard size and impossible to identify people} Dr. Knauer said this photograph alone was worth the whole lot to him for the memories it brought back."
"The most surprising thing I learned from Dr. Knauer is he is very adamant that Max, Otto and Wilhelm were children of a second wife and therefore adopted. I suspect there were children of the second wife, but I would guess them to be more likely Wilhelm and Richard and perhaps some girls.
