Note: Daughter Dorothy later wrote: I have identified the pictures I am sending you. It will seem strange that there is so little about the Kandle side of the family. My father rarely mentioned his parents, altho [sic] he had several brothers:Ausbin [sic], William, Simon, Albert, and Charles; also two sisters, Anna and Lily. HIs father's name was Aquilla K. They lived in Rosenhayne [sic], in South Jersey, not far from Bridgeton or Vineland. They were (the parents of my father) buried in that town, and about four or five years ago Daddy and I went there to see if we could get some information about them. We couldn't find the churchyard where they were buried, and as it was a Saturday we couldn't see any records in the courthouse there. I have regretted that I knew so little of my father because he was a brilliant man, agressive and ambitious. It may have been he wasn't proud of his family, because whenever I brought the subject up he seemed not to want to discuss it. When I'd question my mother, she said they were very hard working people and farmed their land, and that she did't care much for them. I was not too surprised after she told me of an experience she had there at their farm when she and my father were visiting for a day or so. She was pregnant with her first child, and during the day she had a fall which brought on a miscarriage. They couldn't get a doctor and she sufferred great agony. Her screams sent everyone to the barn to sleep for the night, and I guess my father and his mother were theonly ones who tried to help. A doctor finally did come after a day or so and delivered her of a misconception. It was not even a baby, just a monstrous growth. It was a long time before she recovered, but she was a strong helathy woman and finally came around. A year later my brother was born, then my sister Margaret, a sister Helen was born a year after me. Helen lived only six mos. she had spinal meningitis; Margaret died of a throat infection when I was only a few months old (she was three years old).
