a. Note:   Occupation: Radio Service Engineer, worked at Radio Rentals in Hanley until buying a fish and chip shop at 155 Newcastle Street, Burslem about 1949/1950.
 Sold up and left for N.Z. 13th June, 1953 on board the SS Rangitoto. Arrived at Wellington, NZ 6 weeks later. Took train to Auckland. Lived at 7 Ward St New Lynn.

 Dagger donated to the Auckland War Memorial Library.
 Museum Catalogue Ref No.W2965. SA STURMABTEILUNG Standard Service Dagger.
 Donated in the late 1950's. The dagger was worn by all German ranks from 1933 onwards, modelled from 16th century Swiss hunting daggers. Fairly common. Value abt. $500NZ in 1995. Nothing is known as to how he acquired the dagger, as he was not involved in fighting as such, he was only involved in electrical and mechanical work on the tanks etc. and spoke little of the war. We only knew it was smuggled out of Belgium at the end of the 2nd WW.

  Joe served in the British Army in the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME).
 Was stationed in Belgium and environs.
