Note: BASTIAN HANSON Bastian Hanson, one of the best known and highly respected farmers of Lac Qui Pane county and early pioneer of this county, passed away at his home in Freeland Township on Saturday, December 3. He had attained the age of 79 years, 11 months and 5 days. Mr. Hanson had been failing in health for the past year. Funeral services were held last Tuesday at 1:30 from the home and at 2 p.m. from the Florida Lutheran Church, Rev. O.H. Hove officiating, assisted by Rev. G.S. Froiland. The church was filled to capacity, attesting to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Special music at the services consisted of a vocal solo, 'Tank Naar Engang� sung by Rev. Hove at the home service, arid three solos at the church service, 'Just As I Am' sung by Miss Carol Hanson, 'Den Store Hvide Flok', sung by Rev. Hove, and 'The Lord's Prayer', sung by Mrs. Russell Stonier. Pallbearers were six sons: Peter B. Hanson, William E. Hanson, Lloyd E. Hanson, Rudolph B. Hanson, Carl M. Hanson and Le Roy C. Hanson. Honorary pallbearers were Car7. Thorson, Et.H. Mahlum, Ihore Oien, Christ Kopper-ud, Clarence Aure, Ed Kittleson, Samuel Lewison, Q.S. Knudson, Volney Peterson, Sever Haukedahl, Ole B. Skorseth and Arnold Carstens. Interment was made in the Florida Cemetery. Bastian Hanson was born at Eidskogen, Norway, on December 26, 1669, the son of the late Karen and Mathias Hanson. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Norway. When Bastian was six months old he emigrated with his parents to America. The family settled at Hehron in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, where the elder Hanson rented a farm. The family remained there for seven years, after which they moved to Freeland Township. The trip from Wisconsin to the new home in Minnesota was made by wagon and took five weeks to complete. Arriving in Freeland, the elder Hanson homesteaded a tract in Section 28 of Freeland Township. Mathias Hanson passed away in l902 and Mrs. Hanson in 1903. Bastian began his schooling in Wisconsin and completed it in his home district in Freeland. He was confirmed by Rev. Hinderaker. On March 19, 1891, Bastian Hanson was married to Sophia Skorseth of Freeland, also a native of Norway. The young couple settled on a farm in Freeland, where they had since resided. Twelve children were born to this union, all but one of whom survive their father. Mr. Hanson was a charter member of the Florida congregation and was one of the most Loyal supporters and workers of that congregation. He served as treasurer for 14 years, trustee for 9 years and deacon for 31 years. The later position he held at the time of his death. He was an unselfish worker for his community, and active both in civic and organizational affairs. He served as county commissioner for 16 years, township supervisor for 4 years and served as director in the Lac Qui Par!e Fire Insurance Co., the Farmers Elevator. Canby Shipping Association, Canby Creamery and other activities too numerous to mention. Mr. Hanson was preceded in death by one son, Rudolph, who passed away in infancy. He is survived by his widow, five daughters and six sons, namely: Clara Erickson, at home, Beivina ( Mrs. Lee Shaffer) of Dawson, Stella( Mrs. John Weckworth) of Madison, Helen ( Mrs. Elmer Wager) of Dawson, Alice (Mrs. Elmer Wolff) of Madison, Peter, at home, William and Lloyd of Canby, Rudolph and LeRoy of Madison, and Carl of Dawson. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, a large number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends copied from Florida Lutheran Church booklet
