I saw your message on genforum concerning Charles Brown and Abgail
Hogaboom. I have looked and looked for this family. Charles is not my
direct line, but he is suppose to be the brother of my William W. Brown -
children of Obadiah Brown and Sarah Canelly/Conelly. I would love to
exchange further information with you. I've got the Brown line back for
several generations, which I will be glad to share, but have not been
able to find all of Obadiah and Sarah's children. My William W. Brown
eventually settled in DeKalb Co., IL where he died. Looking forward to
 hearing from you.

I know what you mean about not knowing what to do next with this line -
where do you search with such a common name. I was stuck for years and
years on William and all I knew was he was born in NY. I finally found
his wife's family in Sullivan Co. and a short history on him - but still
no parents or siblings. There are hundreds of Browns it seems in Sullivan Co. I finally analzyed everything I had and thought that maybe
Thaddeus Brown was William's father (try an approach until you can prove
or disprove it). I put some queries out and a man answered me who had
done alot of research in Sullivan Co. years ago on his Brown line. He
said that my William was the son of Obadiah not Thaddeus.
Circumstantially William fit fine with Thaddeus' family and Obadiah was
no where around. (I still haven't found a complete list of children for
Thaddeus, which I should pursue just so I have the information). He sent
me the information he had on Obadiah's family which was sent to him in
the early 1980's. I doubted what he sent me because there was no
documentation "family records" was used as the source, which doesn't cut
it on a family back in the late 1700's - 1800's. This lady that he received this information from had my William going to Michigan & I knew
my William was never in Michigan . There were several errors on her
sheet. I spent 5 days in Salt Lake last fall trying to prove the family of Obadiah and Sarah. Trying to prove that my William did belong to
them. First problem is there were at least 3 Obadiah Brown's that lived
in the same area at the same time. You'd think a name like Obadiah would
be easier to find. Our Obadiah was from Rye, Westchester Co., NY, and he
died (I believe - disappears from the census here) in Warwarsing, Ulster,
NY. I don't know that he ever lived in Sullivan Co., NY, but many of his children did. I found all of Obadiah's children except your Charles and
 a son Peter.
I still couldn't tie my William in. I finally went back to DeKalb Co.,
IL records and read all the county newsletter publications (unindexed).
On one of the early census records I found my William living next door to
his sister Phebe and her husband John Mullen. (they were suppose to have gone to Michigan too according to that list of children I received).
Phebe had died before 1850 & John had remarried by then. But - I was
able to find more information on her, county histories, etc. that finally satisfied me. I will probably not find the absolute documentation I am
looking for - but all the children on the group sheet seem to fit & the
family names are there in their families.
Send me your address and I will make copies of my sheets and send them to you - this is the easiest as I've got my families in several different
programs and am still updating everything. I live in Boise - so we are
 not too far apart.
I would really appreciate a group sheet for Charles and Abigail. I did
find them in the 1850 census last night for LaSalle Co., IL (next door to
DeKalb Co.). I had no idea how old Charles was - is 1796 the right year
of his birth? On the group shee
