Notes
a. Note:   Letter from David T. Harrison to Ruth R. Startt [n.d.]: "About the spelling of the name, Startt-Start, I checked with the Old Wye Cemetery Record & Burials Register of Wye Parish, Ledger of Lots, Burials 1860-1970. There may be a tombstone or gravesite for an Elizabeth Start - whose date of Burial/Death is 11 Nov 1865 at the age of 70 allowing her to be born around 1795. The note states 'Someone added second "t" to this name in the Register and we feel that Startt is the correct family name. Baptismal records 11 Dec 1898, 12 Jan 1905 Queenstown - Quite a number of Startts buried in cemetery in Easton, T.C., MD.' Not only is the Start(t) spelling confirmed from an Episcopal Church register but also the denomination from which they came."
The story about the spelling of the name is probably fanciful. Opinion in our branch of the family favors the version that the extra t was added, for no apparent reason except that it looked fancier, around 1889, first appearing in print in announcements of the wedding of Mary E. and William Andrew Start(t), Jr. [BSG]
