Notes
a. Note:   had a hard life after she married. They moved often and she had to work hard to make ends meet. After the death of Mary's father (Samuel) her mother (Nancy Susannah Wood Bear) lived with them in Howell Co. MO. In 1892, they lived at Edna, Kansas. On the morning of 5 Oct, 1892, the Dalton Boys stopped at the Cox house and forced Mary to cook their breakfast at gun point. When they sat down to eat, they put their guns beside their plates while they ate. After they finished eating, all of them left. When Mary was cleaning up the dishes, she found a silver dollar under each plate. Mary's youngest son (Johnie Smoker) was only about 5 years old, but could remember this and told his children about it in later years. This was the same day that the Daltons rode in to Coffyville, Kansas to rob a bank (and all but one were killed). (provided by Phoebie Jane Cox)
