Note: father died when he was ten. At the age of eleven, he started work on a packet-boat as a cabin boy on the Ohio canal. After that he spent most seasons working as a hunter or on boats. in 1864, he wrote a book (penned by Sgt. Downs) "Four Years a Scout and Spy" In the 1960 OH census, he is listed with his wife Catherine and four children. Unfortunatly, he neglected to mention this family in his book. He did mention the young beautiful Annie Rollins from Natchez Mississippi, who he met on a ferry on the Mississippi river. He married Annie after the civil war. Lorain was a handsome man - and a self proclaimed hero. He was in his glory as a spy for the union army. He recieved many letters of praise from famous generals for his services during the civil war. His efforts as a spy for the union army were often aided by his brother's position in the confederate army. General Lorenzo Ruggles was highlyl respected in the south. The mention of his name as a brother was enough for the confederate troops to 'let Lorain in to their confidences'. Lorain died alone at a soldiers home in Grand Rapids MI on December 3rd, 1902.
