a. Note:   had two wives (he wore the first one out). As most Ruggles men, he had many children: 12 sons, 7 daughters (7 children from his second wife). This number of children was not unusual for most Ruggles men. In fact, most Ruggles men remarried 2 or 3 times after the deaths of their wives and continued having children late in their own life.
b. Note:   after which "leaving a large farm disposed of by a will. The children went to law, and spent the entire property in breaking the will and settling the estate. In consequence of that I was thrown upon my own labor for my support at a very early age" Lorain Ruggles
