Note: Herman J.A. Bartelle ahd his wife Augusta (Ankele) Bartelle, both 24 years old, arrived in America from Alsace-Lorraine in April of 1873. The first of their three sons, Frank J. was born in June of 1874 in Ohio. Sons Albert and Robert, and a daughter, were to come later. Alsace-Lorraine is a fertile region along the border between France and Germany. Most of its people are Roman Catholic, both of German and French origin. For hundreds of years the region has been a prize in wars between the two countries. The Franco-Prussian War ended in January, 1871; the region was ceded to Germany; and thousands of Alsatians immigrated. It is believed that Herman and Augusta lived in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, from the time of immigration to their deaths. However, no record of them has been found in the Ohio Census for 1880. The first listing for Herman was found in the 1884 Toledo City Telephone Directory, living on Woodville Avenue. Herman renounced allegiance to William, Emperor of Germany, on 26 JUL 1886, when he filed his certificate of intent to become a citizen of the United States. His name was written Herman J.A. Bartelle. When Herman signed official naturalization papers on 25 OCT 1888, he signed, simply, "Herman Bartel." The name has been spelled both Bartel and Bartelle by different branches of the family ever since. In the 1900 federal census, we find an entry for "Herman and Augusta" (no last name) living at 623 Nevadaa Avenue (this should be 621 Nevada, I feel certain), Precinct A, Ward l6, Toledo, Ohio. Apparently, when the census taker arrived on 1 JUN 1900, no one was at home. A neighbor may have provided the couple's first names to the enumerator. In the 1910 federal census, Herman Bartel is listed as 60, living alone at 621 Nevada Street. He is listed as a homeowner with a mortgage. The census indicates that he had been married for 37 years, was a laborer doing odd jobs, and was working on 15 APR 1910. He had been out of work for 16 weeks in 1909. In 1920, Herman, now 70, is listed as a lodger with Frank Shasteen, at 621 Nevada Street. He is a "sweeper", working for wages, in an automobile parts establishment. There are many other auto-related employment descriptions for persons living in the same neighborhood. We find Augusta in 1920 listed as a patient at the Toledo State Hospital. She is 69 years old and listed as a "ward worker." Herman was a resident of the Little Sisters of the Poor Old Folks Home in Toledo when he died 1 NOV 1926 at the age of 77. The death certificate lists the cause of death as chronic interstitial nephritis, abcess of both kidneys, a right inguinal hernia, and gangrene of the bowel. Willow Cemetery records (Oregon, Ohio) indicate that he died at the County Hospital. ***** Also see notes under wife Augusta. *****
