(1/18/79) Otillia Merling came to this country with her brother Theodore (?). They landed in Baltimore. They became separated. Many years later in Sandusky, Ohio, Otilia was reading a German magazine (church) that gave information about a young girl in Baltimore by the name of Merling who was about to take her vows to become a nun. Otilia wrote to the girl to see if her father was Theodore. It turned out to be him and the Grosch Family went to Baltimore for a reunion.
A granddaughter of Theodore, Madelynn R. Spellerberg is still living in Baltimore. She is a cripple, having had polio as a child. Her brother, Joe, lives with her. Another brother, Ferdinand, died about 25years ago. Madelynn Spellerberg 2334 Martin Drive Essex, MD 21221 There are records of a Frank (Francis) Merling born Oct. 1852. He immigrated to the United States in 1864. He is thought to be one of Otillia's brothers. He married Mary Bachmann. She was born July 1855 in Maryland. They had 11 children, 3 of which died. One of their children (Christina Theresa b. 7/30/1877) became a nun with the Notre Dame order in 1900 She died 2/4/1961
