By 1958, John S. Garrett had taken a land patent in that part of Coffee County that later became Geneva County. It was: SE/SE S14 2N 19E Garrett ,John S 24301 C 1858/11/01 C That was very near his grandfather, James Sansom; his brother, James; his Tucker cousins and others.

Garret 29 Farmer $500 (value of real estate, $5000 (personal property), b. in Alabama Jane 28, b. in Georgia, cannot read or write William 8, b. in Alabama, attended school Nancy 7, b. in Ala., attended school John M. 5, b. in Ala. Jane R., 2 (f), b. in Ala. (This is an obvious error, and should have been James R., 2) Jane’s mother, Nancy Fowler 70, b. in Geo., was living with them. (Nancy was widow of Thornton Fowler). They were living next household to Bartley and Sphia Tucker. Sophia was sister to William W. Garrett. He and Nancy were ten households away, with many other relatives nearby.)

Two households after Rebecca, HH#235: Thomas Garrett (her son) Nov. 1861, age 38, m. 20 years, b. in Alabama, Tally of Lumber, could read and write, owned his home Mary C., wife Children: John W., Nora J., Nancy P., Flora C., Della M., Stella E., Thomas (Jerry Thomas Garrett died in 1904, according to family records).
Census for 1910, 1920 and 1930 for Sophia Emeline Garrett Griffith all report that she was born in Alabama and back up the October, 1866 date. It is clear from her record that John S. Garrett remained in Coffee Co., Alabama at least to that date.
