He spent his early years on his father's farm. At the age of 16, he taught school, quite successfully. Afterward, he attended Granville College, now Denison University. At the age of 21, his father booked passage for him on a whaling ship that spent 3 1/2 years cruising the South Pacific and visited parts of South America and Mexico. Upon his return in 1845, he and his brothers came to Columbus, Ohio, and began a book publishing business. Later they became the Carpenter Brothers Co. that owned a wholesale mercantile business. Stephen helped to erect a number of business blocks, including one named the Carpenter block on East Town Street. Later in life he was occupied with mining interests in Colorado. He was member of the Universalist Church and a 32nd degree member of Scottish Rite of the Masons. Stephen's birthdates and birthplace were found in 3 different obituaries. The cemetery interment record gives Oct. 10, 1822, but I chose to go with the obits, because of 3 newspapers having the same date. Marriage data was taken from a copy of their marriage license. First found in 1860 census for Franklin County, Columbus, Ohio. Merchant, value of Real estate, 15,000, personal estate, 5000 The family was found in the1880 census for Miami County, Ohio, Piqua ward, Columbus city directoris for 1881, 1889, 1890 and 1896. At time of Stephen's death, the family was living at 1323 E. Main St., Montgomery Township, Franklin County, Ohio. All the children were living with him, except Van, whose address is given as Columbia, South America. Date of death taken from interment record and probate records.
