Note: N455 1820 GAVIN THOMAS Colleton County SC p.44 000100-00100 In 1812, Stephen Blocker received a grant for 409 acres on Salkehatchie Swamp, a part of Little Salkehatchie River in Colleton District, SC. In subsequent grants, the plats showed him as an adjacent neighbor to Benjamin Adams, Henry Ulmer, Andrew Smoke and Daniel Benton, among others. The 1820 census shows that Thomas and Nancy Ann Gavin lived 3 households from Andrew Smoke, 6 away from Henry Ulmer, and 9 away from Benjamin Adams and several Bentons. The 1810 census showed that Stephen Blocker lived just 5 households from Benjamin Adams. At least 4 different plats showed them to be adjacent to each other.
1840 Dale Co., Alabama, (later Coffee Co.) census. 50-60 years old. 1850 census, Coffee Co., Alabama,HH#767 census reports him a teacher. 60 years old, with wife Ann (Nancy) and children Samuel, Elizabeth and Lewis at home. Next household was Zebulon Hollinsworth and at HH#771 (four households away) was son Stephen age 22, b. in SC, who had married Annie Hollingsworth.

1857: His son, Steven, testified in 1898 that he had lived in Holmes Co., Florida for 41 years, making his arrival there about 1857, according to papers found in his pension application. Most likely, Thomas and Nancy arrived there about that time as well. 1860 census, Holmes Co., FL, just Nancy and son Stephen, but Thomas was listed in the 1860 mortality schedule for Holmes Co. with this entry: 1860 GAVIN THOMAS HOLMES CO.
