Notes
a. Note:   N1716 Thornton Fowler served on the May,1822 Petit Jury of Houston Co., GA. Her brother, John, was reported to be born in the same county. Elizabeth was born August, 1822, so that places her family in Houston Co. at the time of her birth. Elizabeth was found in 1850 and 1860 Coffee Co. census and 1870 Butler Co., AL census with husband David and children. They moved to Oakey Streak, Butler Co., AL, before November, 1869. Nov., 1869, Elizabeth wrote a letter in which she spoke of "The old man found them all well in Dale", indicating some of the family was still living in Dale Co. The 1870 Santa Rosa Co., FL census lists John and Rebecca (Jane) Garrett and their children, William and Nancy. A Jan., 1870 letter from Elizabeth Kelley tells: "me and David (went) to Florida to see mother and sister Jane". By the middle of 1871, David and Elizabeth were living in Red Level, Covington Co., AL, sharecropping. Margaret was about 2 miles away. They were planning to get their own place by fall. Between 1871-1876, David Kelly died and Elizabeth Fowler Kelly moved to Santa Rosa Co., FL.Several of her children settled there permanently. April 2, 1876, Elizabeth recorded her mother's death in a letter she wrote her daughter-in-law. A letter written by Elizabeth May 28, 1876 indicated that she was a widow and was living in Santa Rosa Co., Florida. She could read and write, as proven by the letters. In the last letter she spoke of difficulty in writing because of the condition of her hands. Elizabeth was found in the 1880 census, Santa Rosa Co., FL, Pcnt. 1, p. 173B, living with Jeremiah, Marion and Jane and she was widowed. She was found in 1900 census for Santa Rosa Co., Florida, Pct. 8, age 77, BD: Aug., 1822. She reported that she had given birth to 12 children, with 8 of them surviving in 1900. Death: Elizabeth filed for homestead, but died before it was complete. Her death date was found on homestead papers. Her heirs sold her property in 1904. See land deed. Hers and David's names listed among charter members of Providence Baptist Church,1844.
