He wrote this letter then to sister-in-law Rebecca Kelley, telling of his family: June 4, 1871 Butler County, Ala Dear sister I seate mysef to right you a few lines to inform you that wee are all well as common. My oldest child has bin very sick with the chills and fever but is getting well. He will be 3 years old the 8th of July. The youngest will be a year old of July. He will soon bee walking en Ruebin is livin with me this year. a tolable good crop wee 20 ac---s in cotton. wee buan o it (????) I will come out to see you after I get done work-g. spec I shall want you to help me to pick for cotton. Tell Levew she must bee smart and learn all she can. tell to right me a letter today and asberry and all of them to right to me.
