James born about 1837, teamster 1880 census: Parker and Brewton, Escambia Co., AL, p. 206c, James “Fukeway”, age 45,, farmer; Elizaebeth, wife, 38; Sabra, 11; Thomas 9, James 7; Joe 5;, Andrew 3; John 3; Henry 6 mos., all called sons and daughters, all b. in Alabama. The Fuquas were living just two households from Charles Haveard, the parents of Elizabeth. 1900 census, Escambia Co., AL, age 70, day laborer, could not read or write, owned farm and free of debt on it. 1910 census: Parker, pcnt. 2, Escambia Co., AL, , p. 20, HH#80, James, 73, m. 45 yrs., could read and write, farming, owned his home free of mortgage; wife Babe (Elizabeth), 65, had 13 children but 11 surviving, could read and write Conf. War census: He said he was born February 15, 1835 on the Yellow River, Hewitt's Bluff, Walton Co., Florida, in his 1907 Confederate War soldier census. This is about 10 miles from where I live. "The records show that James Fuqua, private, Company C, 3d Battalion Florida Cavalry, CSA, enlisted September 17, 1861 Engage. con't: at Milton, Florida. On the muster roll covering the period from 1863/04/30 to 08/31, last roll of Company C on file, he was reported present. This company became Company E, 15th Confederate Cavalry, CSA, and on the muster roll for May and June, 1864, Remarks: The last role on file, this soldier was reported as follows: "Deserted about 1864/03/01 while on sick furlough." No later record of him has been found." http://www.archives.state.al.us/civilwar/soldier.cfm The major Confederate force in the area consisted of Clanton's Alabama brigade of cavalry, infantry and artillery. They were posted to guard the railroad from Mobile Bay to Montgomery, skirting Escambia County to the north. Morale in the brigade was low and during the winter of '63-64 some of the troops mutinied. This resulted in the brigade being broken up and the regiments reassigned to separate commands. They were replaced by more reliable troops.
