In 1930 Yetta, wife of Irving and mother of Bill, Leonard, and Phil died of a brain aneurysm. Leonard was nine years old, having been born in a summer home in New London, Connecticut in 1921 (Notes from Bobby Zarahn)
Leonard joined the United States Army Air Corps in 1940. Being assigned duty for some training purposes in the Tallahassee, Florida area, he met Emma Walther who was a student at Florida State University. The story goes that they met on the steps of the old State Capital Building on a Sunday afternoon. (Notes from Bobby Zarahn)
