Family tradition (as told to me by Grover Haveard) tells the reason for Charles' nickname "Piddy". He was in the Confederate War and became tired of the whole thing. He came home (deserted) and hid out in the swamps. The women of the family would bring food and supplies to him, and he stayed in the swamps about a year. They felt great "pity" for him, thus the name.
