Note: N858 Sidney Ayo was my grandfather, and I always knew him as Papa -- a gentle, soft-spoken, lean man with white hair and a kind smile. He was truly one of the sweetest people I’ve ever known; I don’t think I ever heard him say an unkind word to, or about, anyone. His greatest love was fishing, and he and my dad and I used to frequently go to the Atchafalaya Basin at Henderson, and go out in his small motorboat to fish for bass and perch among the cypress stumps. I was only eight when he died, and I regret to this day that I didn’t have the time to get to know my grandfather better.
