Conrad Geil and his son Jacob Geil" by Joseph H. Wenger, South English, IA 1914 - gives history of him and his father, and all ch., dates and places. "Died April 19, 1856 near Bremen, Fairfield Co. OH. Another report says that Jacob Geil died May 21 1840. They were married in 1784 or 1785. I am informed that the record of these Geil families was destroyed during the burning of their home; hence some of the data are difficult to obtain. For this reason those children who have not dates of birth may not be placed in proper rotation. Bremen, Fairfield Co. Ohio. Mennonite minister. 1830 census Rush Creek, Fairfield Co. OH - Jacob Gile, 1 m. 10-15, 1 m. 50-60; 2 f.15-20, 1 f. 20-30, 1 f. 50-60. There is a Jacob Gile on OH tax rolls 1800-1810 for Fairfield Co. which is just east of Columbus. Ordered copy of land purchase related to those tax rolls, received 7/93 copy of the purchase of 110 acres, R17 T16 Sec 19 by Jacob and Elizabeth Gile, for $500, Book J, p. 178, in Fairfield Co. on 3 Nov 1814, from Jacob and Nancy Beery, the original purchaser of that land was John Beery before 1801 - possibly the father of Jacob Beery. Possibly the Nancy Beery is the wife of this Jacob Gile, since in 1850 there is a Noah M. Gile, age 26, with wife Sophia and also living with them is a Jonas and Samuel Beery with what appears to be their mother, Barbara, age 56, b. VA. All in Marion, Hocking Co. OH, with Christian Gile and family on same page, and Samuel Gile and family near. Received info from Auditor of State showing that Hocking Co. was organized 1818, from Fairfield Co. possibly explains above. 1815, Jacob Gile and wife Elizabeth, purchased 110 acres in Fairfield Co. OH from Jacob and Nancy Beery, R17, T16, S19. Looks like same as above. Photocopy of ledger shows purchase dated 3 Nov 1814, Recorded 26 Jan 1815. Grantee Index to Deeds, Fairfield Co. OH - Jacob Beery's elder brother, John, was original purchaser of land in Ohio - purchased whole section 17, twp. 16, r. 19 before 1801. In 8185, Jacob & Nancy (Geil) Beery sold to Jacob and Elizabeth (Beery) Geil 110 acres. Karen Smith, Lancaster, OH researcher - "1830 census showing Jacob, John and Christian Gile in Rushcreek and Abraham and Henry in Berne." News from Ohio - re: speculation below - Karen Smith, researcher in Lancaster OH reports they are in a book Pioneer People in Fairfield Co. - Jacob and Eliz. These people will be related to the Jacob Geil, Mennonite minister, from Chester, Bucks Co. PA. 10/94 - FGR from Helen Urbanchuk, 391 E. Reliance Rd., Telford, PA 18969, shows Jacob Geil m. Elizabeth Beery - he was 3rd child of Jacob Geil b. 1742, shows b. 1771- d. 1844; also his sister, Nancy (5th ch.) m. Jacob Beery. Geil History supplied by her, copies of all males. Here is the information that I have on him: He was a Mennonite Minister who immigrated from the province of Alsace, Germany to Pennsylvania at the age of 8 with his parents. His father was J. Conrad Geil. I do not know the name of his mother. Anna Clymer was the first wife, "Miss Fly" was the second. The information for Jacob came from: HISTORY OF THE DESCENDANTS OF NICHOLAS BERRY by Joseph H. Wenger THE BEERY FAMILY OF PAGE COUNTY, IOWA by Phyllis Fulk and Lois Brown Miller DESCENDANTS OF HENRY KELLER OF YORK COUNTY, PENN. AND FAIRFIELD COUNTY, OHIO by Edward Seitz Shumaker THE BRENNEMAN HISTORY by Albert H. Gerberich GEIL FAMILY HISTORY, LDS film #1321173 THE History of J. Conrad Geil states: "Jacob Geil, the only son of J. Conrad, Geil, of whom we hve any knowledge, was born in Alsace, Germany near the Rhine, in 1746; and at the age of 8 years with his father, he emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1754. About the year 1767, he married a Miss Clymer and settled in Chester Co., Pa. Here they lived during the Revolutionary War, after which they moved to Rockingham Co., Va., near Bowmans Mill, now (1912) owned by Mr. Clark, one 1.2 miles sough of Broadway, Rockingham Co., Va., in the noted Shenandoah Valley. Here Mr. Geil bought 500 acres of land of David Brenneman, situated on Linville Creek, the deed bearing the date of May 23, 1783. Here he lived, dying in 1794. He was buried on is old home farm, where, in June, 1913, in a new tombstone was erected over his grave, which is in a private old family cemetery, containing only a few graves.
